Stress-free packing: a guide for tired mums

Updated: Jul 5

The holiday season is just around the corner - if not here already - and many families are planning their getaways. I know I'm dreaming of nothing but sea, sunshine (and that dreaded sand) right now.

While packing for a trip can be a challenge for anyone, adding a small child or two into the mix can make it even more daunting. But don’t worry - we’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks to help make the packing process smoother and stress-free, all learned from my recent getaway from Portugal, which was my first abroad trip with two. But I survived it!

Let's go:

1. Check your baggage allowance

Start by checking your airline's baggage allowance. I know it seems obvious, and most airlines let you bring two large child items (like a pushchair or car seat) for children under five, but check to give yourself peace of mind. Don’t forget to check the hand luggage rules as well, as policies for infants and toddlers can vary. Many airlines allow a Trunki case for toddlers, which is often bigger than the advertised dimensions.

2. Invest in a car seat bag

If you're taking a car seat, consider buying a car seat bag. This can also double as extra storage for nappies and other bulky essentials. They can fit a lot!

3. Bring a snooze shade

A snooze shade is a real lifesaver, protecting your little one from the sun, providing shade, and helping them sleep more easily while you're out and about during the day.

4. Use a foldable pushchair

A foldable pushchair adds convenience and, when combined with a baby carrier, makes navigating airports much easier. Ask your friends before investing though - I use mine so rarely as I have a pram, and was able to lend mine to a friend for their first family holiday which she appreciated!

5. Pack high-SPF suncream

Opt for a high SPF suncream, like factor 50. It seems obvious I know, but pack enough and you'll have peace of mind and will be able to relax yourself. Childs Farm is a trusted brand, and you can also buy suncreams with colour to help you ensure you've covered all of your little one's skin, but there are many great options out there.

6. Keep cool with a pram fan

A pram fan is amazing for keeping your child cool in hot weather. They can be found on sites like Amazon for good value.

7. Stay even cooler with a paddling pool

I found that taking a small paddling pool was a game-changer. With my 5 month old not being able to sit up it created a safe space around the pool (I didn’t actually put water in it) and it meant was easy to keep her in the shade. This is also where the car seat bag comes in handy!

8. Pack lightly

I'm not crazy by suggesting this I promise... It’s tempting to pack lots of adorable outfits, but in reality, it’s likely to be hot, and your child may spend most of the day in a nappy or vest. Stick to essentials and a few spare outfits for accidents, you need space too for your own beautiful outfits that will make you feel good!

9. Include comfort items

Don’t forget to pack a few comfort items for your child; their favourite blanket, stuffed animal, or bedtime book. These familiar items can provide a sense of comfort in new surroundings.

10. Choose travel-friendly snacks

Avoid chocolate-based snacks (trust me on this one, I've learned from this mistake whilst in a confined plane seat space). Instead, pack travel-friendly snacks like crackers, oat bars, and biscuits, along with a reusable water bottle.

11. Bring entertainment

Stickers are always a hit, especially reusable ones. Pack a few small toys and books. If your child uses a tablet, load it with their favorite games and movies. In our household, Numberblocks is a favorite!

12. Prepare a first aid kit

Pack essentials like Calpol sachets, teething powders, and a travel temperature gun. Hopefully, you won’t need these, but it’s better to be prepared and you'll feel better knowing it's on-hand.

13. Plan sleeping arrangements

If you’re bringing a travel cot, don’t forget a sheet for the mattress. This provides home comfort through familiar smells and ensures clean bedding. If your child uses sleeping bags, make sure you have the right tog for the temperature.

14. Use sterilizing microwave bags

If you need to sterilize bottles, bring sterilizing microwave bags or cold water Milton tablets. They’re convenient and easy to use.

With these tips in mind, you’re all set for a fun, and hopefully stress-free family holiday. Happy travels mummas, and if you can, try and take a moment or two for yourself, you deserve it!
